Arranging a Game

SECTION 4 - ARRANGING A GAME

12 OFFICIAL RECORD

Score Card/s shall, at all times, be the official scoring record of any game. Controlling bodies shall issue one or two Score Cards for each game.

Score Boards may be used for player/spectator information and shall be positioned on the top of one or both banks of each rink.

13 GENERAL FORM AND DURATION

The Controlling Body shall determine the number of ends or shots up to be played in a game and/or the time allotted to a time limit game under its control.

The ends of the game shall be played alternately in opposite directions excepting as provided in Law 31.

14 SELECTING THE RINKS FOR PLAY

When a game is to be played, the draw for the rinks to be used shall be made by the Opponents, the Skips, their representatives or the Controlling Body.

No player in a competition or game shall play or practise on the same rink on the day of such competition or game before play commences under penalty of disqualification, excepting as provided in Law 17A.

15 PLAY ARRANGEMENTS

Games shall be organised in the following play arrangements:

15A Singles Game

A Singles game shall be played between two players, each playing two, three or four bowls singly and alternately, the number of bowls being determined by the Controlling Body.

15B Pairs Game

A Pairs game shall be played by two contending Teams each of two players who shall play the determined number of bowls in the order designated by the Controlling Body.

15C Triples Game

A Triples game shall be played by two contending Teams each of three players, who shall play two or three bowls singly and in turn the number of bowls being determined by the Controlling Body.

15D Fours Game

A Fours game shall be played by two contending Teams each of four players, who shall play two bowls singly and in turn.

15E A Sides Game

A Sides game shall be played by two contending sides, each composed of an equal number of Teams/players.

15F A Series of Games

Games in series shall be arranged to be played on several consecutive occasions as:

(i) A series or sequence of games organised in the form of an eliminating competition, and arranged as Singles, Pairs, Triples or Fours.

(ii) A series or sequence of Sides games organised in the form of a competition.

15G A Special Tournament of Games

Singles games and Teams games may also be arranged in group form as a special tournament of games in which contestants play each other in turn.

15H Time Limit Games

The Controlling Body may specify a time limit for any game except a final or possible final, and all time limit games shall be subject to the following mandatory conditions:

(i) Replaying dead ends

If at the time limit the Jack has been delivered the end shall be completed but not replayed if the end becomes dead, except for the special circumstances outlined in Laws 28C, 32, 34C and 55.

(ii) Time Signal

The commencement of play and the expiry of time shall be signalled by the Umpire by a bell or some other means clearly audible to all players concerned. Where the time limit is not common to all games on any green, the Umpire shall notify the Opponents or Skips in individual games when the time limit has expired.

Alternatively, the Controlling Body may determine that a warning bell shall be rung at the expiry of the time stipulated, the end in progress completed, if not earlier made or declared dead, and one further end played under the same condition.

(iii) Delivery of Jack

Should the Jack be delivered not in accordance with Law 20(i), or by the wrong player, or before the bowls have been properly cleared and positioned, as required by Law 19(i), it shall then be placed by the opposing Skip or Marker (as directed by the Opponent). Any such placing shall not take place after the time limit has expired except in cases where cessation of play would mean that the non-offending Team or Opponent would thereby be deprived of an opportunity of winning the game.

(iv) Delaying Play

If a player delays play, the Umpire may, by way of penalty, direct that one further end be played even though the time limit shall have expired. The Umpire shall also report the matter to the Controlling Body.

(v) Special Conditions

The Controlling Body shall state in the Conditions of Play the procedure to be followed if the scores are tied at the expiry of time.

16 PRACTICE

(i) A player or Team who has not previously played on the same day on the same green due to meet a player or Team who has, after requesting shall practise provided:

  •
  • (a) there is sufficient time available without delaying the competition, and
  • (b) a rink is available.

Practice shall be allowed for a Team with a bye, notwithstanding that the Team or Player may have already played on the same green on the same day.

(ii) The Controlling Body shall allocate the rink.

(iii) Practice play is not permitted on a rink upon which the player or Team has been drawn to play in a subsequent round.

(iv) If two players or Teams are entitled to practise, they may practise together.

    (v) The format of the practice and the number of bowls used in such practice shall be at the option of the players concerned.
