Movement of The Jack

SECTION 7 - MOVEMENT OF THE JACK

29 A LIVE JACK IN THE DITCH

(a) A Jack moved by a bowl in play into the front ditch within the boundaries of the rink shall be deemed to be live.

(b) The Jack in the ditch may be moved by the impact of a Toucher in play and also by the impact of a non-Toucher which remains live on the surface of the rink in play after the impact.

Any movement of the Jack by such incidents shall be valid.

Should a Jack in the ditch be displaced by a non-Toucher entering the ditch, the Jack shall be restored to its former position by the opposing Director or Marker.

If the Jack in the ditch cannot be seen from the mat its position shall be marked by an indicator having a maximum height of 100mm, placed upright on top of the bank and immediately in line with the place where the Jack rests.

 

30 DEAD JACK

If moved by a bowl in play, the Jack shall be dead should it:

pass beyond the face of the bank

come to rest wholly beyond the side boundary of the rink

rest in any opening or inequality of any kind in the bank

rebound to a distance of less than 20m in a direct line from the centre of the mat line.

(ii) The Directors shall agree whether a Jack is live immediately their attention is drawn to the Jack by any Member of either Team and such agreement shall be final and not subject to further determination unless the position of the Jack changes. If they are unable to agree they shall refer the matter to the Umpire whose decision shall be final.

31 DEAD END

When the Jack is dead the end shall be regarded as a dead end and shall not be counted as a played end even though all the bowls have been played.

All dead ends shall be played anew in the same direction unless both Skips or Opponents agree to play in the opposite direction.

All bowls for such replay shall be carried, not rolled on the rink.

 

32 DAMAGED JACK

In the event of a Jack being damaged, the Umpire shall decide if another Jack is necessary and, if so, the end shall be regarded as a dead end and another Jack shall be substituted and the end shall be replayed.

 

33 REBOUNDING JACK

If the Jack is driven against the face of the front bank either within or outside the rink and rebounds onto the rink, or after being played into the ditch, it be moved by a Toucher, so as to find its way onto the rink, it shall be played to as if it had never left the rink.

 

34 JACK DISPLACEMENT

34A Displacement by a participating player

(i) of a Jack in course

If a Jack in course be displaced by a player from its own team, it shall be placed by the opposing Skip in accordance with Law 20.

If a Jack in course be displaced by an opposing player it shall be re-delivered by the same player.

(ii) of a Jack in motion

If a Jack in motion as a result of play be displaced by a player, the opposing Director has the option of:

(a) placing the Jack where the Director believes it would have come to rest and replacing any part of the head disturbed by the displaced Jack, or

(b) declaring the end dead.

(iii) of a Jack at rest

If a Jack at rest on the green or in the ditch be displaced by a player, the opposing Director shall restore the Jack as near as possible to its former position.

34B Displacement by a dead bowl

(i) by a rebounding non-Toucher

A Jack displaced by a non-Toucher rebounding from the bank shall be restored as near as poss­ible to its former position by the opposing Director or by the Marker.

Should a Jack after having been played into the ditch be displaced by a dead bowl, it shall be restored to its marked position by the opposing Director or by the Marker.

(ii) of a Jack in motion

If a Jack in motion on the green or in the ditch be displaced by a dead bowl, it shall be placed by the opposing Director, or Marker (as directed by the Opponent), where he/she believes it would have come to rest.

(iii) of a Jack at rest

If a Jack at rest on the green or in ditch be displaced by a dead bowl, it shall be restored to its former position by the opposing Director. In Singles it shall be restored by the Marker.

34C Displacement by a neutral object or neutral person (other than as provided in Law 34D)

(i) of a Jack in course

If a Jack in course be displaced by a neutral object or neutral person it shall be redelivered by the same player.

(ii) of a Jack in motion

If a Jack in motion be displaced by a neutral object or neutral person it shall be placed where the Directors, or Opponents, agree that the Jack would have come to rest. Failing agreement, the end shall be dead.

(iii) of a Jack at rest

If a Jack at rest on the rink or in the ditch be displaced by a neutral object or a neutral person, it shall be replaced in its former position by agreement between the Directors, or Opponents. Failing agreement, the end shall be dead.

34D Inadvertent displacement

If a Jack be displaced at the time of measuring it shall be restored to its former position by the opposing Director or Opponent.

If such displacement is caused by a Marker or an Umpire, the Marker or Umpire shall restore the Jack to its former position, of which the Marker or Umpire shall be the sole judge.
