Movement of Bowls

SECTION 6 - MOVEMENT OF BOWLS

                    22 LIVE BOWL

A bowl in course on the green which comes to rest within the boundaries of the rink, and not less than 14m measured in a direct line from the centre of the mat line, shall be accounted as a live bowl and shall be in play.

23 TOUCHERS

(i) (a) A Toucher shall be a bowl that in course on the green touches the Jack, or

a bowl that having come to rest falls over and touches the Jack before the next succeeding bowl is delivered, or

if, in the case of the last bowl of an end, after having come to rest falls over and touches the Jack within the period of 30 seconds invoked under Law 43(ii).

(ii) (a) If a Toucher should pass into the ditch within the boundaries of the rink it shall be counted as a live bowl.

No bowl shall be accounted a Toucher by playing on to, or by coming into contact with, the Jack while the Jack is in the ditch.

If a Toucher in the ditch cannot be seen from the mat its position shall be marked by a suitable indicator placed on the top of the bank and immediately in line with the place where the Toucher rests.

                    24 MARKING A TOUCHER

A Toucher shall be marked before the next succeeding bowl is delivered, with a mark which is easily visible and readily removed, by the Director of that team or by the Marker.

If, in the opinion of either Director or Opponent, a Toucher or a wrongly marked bowl comes to rest in such a position that the act of making a mark, or of erasing it, is likely to move the bowl or to alter the head the bowl shall not be marked or have its mark erased but shall be indicated as a Toucher or non-Toucher as the case may be.

If both Directors or Opponents agree that any subsequent movement of the bowl eliminates the necessity for continuation of the indicated provision the bowl shall thereupon be marked or have the mark erased as the case may be.

Care should be taken to remove the Toucher marks from all bowls before they are played. Should a player fail to do so and should the bowl not become a Toucher in the end in play the opposing Director or the Marker shall, immediately the bowl comes to rest, remove such marks unless the bowl is indicated as a non-Toucher in circumstances governed by the earlier provisions of this Law.

25 MOVEMENT OF TOUCHERS

A Toucher in play in the ditch may be moved by the impact of:

a Jack in play, or

another Toucher in play, or

by the impact of a non-Toucher which remains live on the surface of the rink after impact.

Any movement of the Toucher by such incidents shall be valid

(ii) Should a Toucher in the ditch be displaced by a non-Toucher entering the ditch, the Toucher in the ditch shall be restored to its former position by the opposing Director or Marker.

26 DEAD BOWL

(i) Without limiting the application of any other of these Laws, a bowl shall be dead and removed from the rink if :

(a) Not being a Toucher it comes to rest in the ditch, or rebounds onto the playing surface of the rink after contact with the bank, the Jack in the ditch, or a Toucher in the ditch, or

(b) After completing its course, or after being moved as a result of play it comes to rest:

wholly outside the boundaries of the rink, or

within 14m of the mat line, or

(c) In course passes beyond a side boundary of the rink on a bias which would prevent it re-entering the rink.

(ii) The Directors or Opponents shall agree whether a bowl is live immediately their attention is drawn to the bowl by any Member of either Team or the Marker and such agreement shall be final and not subject to further determination unless the position of the bowl changes. If they are unable to agree they shall refer the matter to the Umpire whose decision shall be final.

(iii) A bowl is not rendered dead by a player carrying it whilst inspecting the head.

27 REBOUNDING BOWL

Only Touchers rebounding from the face of the front bank, either within or outside the rink, to the ditch or to the rink shall remain in play.

28 BOWL DISPLACEMENT

28A Displacement by a participating player

(i) of a bowl in course

If a bowl in course be displaced by a player from its own Team it shall be declared dead. Any movement of the head caused by the bowl before it was displaced shall be valid. Any part of the head disturbed after displacement shall be replaced by the opposing Director.

If a bowl in course which has not disturbed the head be displaced by an opposing player it shall be replayed. If the bowl disturbs the head after displacement then the Director of the Team which played the bowl shall have the option of:

                                                  (a) replacing the head and having the bowl replayed, or

(b) declaring the end dead.

(ii) If a bowl in course has disturbed the head before it is displaced by an opposing player, such disturbance shall be valid. The Director of the Team which played the bowl shall have the option of:

(a) placing the bowl where the Director believes it would have come to rest, or

(b) leaving the bowl where it rests.

(iii) of a bowl in motion

If a bowl in motion as a result of play be displaced by a player, then the opposing Director shall have the option of:

(a) placing the bowl where the Director believes it would have come to rest and replacing any part of the head disturbed after the bowl has been displaced, or

declaring the end dead.

(iv) of a bowl at rest

If a bowl at rest or a Toucher in the ditch be displaced by a player, the opposing Director shall restore the bowl or Toucher as near as possible to its former position.

28B Displacement by a dead bowl

(i) by a rebounding non-Toucher

A bowl displaced by a non-Toucher rebounding from the bank shall be restored as near as possible to its former position by the opposing Director or by the Marker.

(ii) of a bowl in motion

If a bowl in motion be displaced by a dead bowl then the opposing Director shall place the displaced bowl where the Director believes it would have come to rest.

(iii) of a bowl at rest

If a bowl at rest or a Toucher in the ditch be displaced by a dead bowl then the bowl or Toucher shall be restored to its former position by the opposing Director or by the Marker.

28C Displacement by a neutral object or neutral person (other than as provided in Law 28D)

(i) of a bowl in course

(a) If a bowl in course be displaced within the boundaries of the rink of play without having disturbed the head, it shall be replayed.

(b) If such a bowl disturbs the head after its displacement the Directors or Opponents shall reach agreement on the replacement of the head and the bowl shall be replayed, otherwise the end shall be dead.

If such a bowl has disturbed the head prior to its displacement any disturbance shall be valid and the Directors or Opponents shall agree on the final position of the displaced bowl and on the replacement of any part of the head disturbed after the displacement of that bowl. If agreement is not reached the end shall be dead.

These provisions shall also apply to a bowl in course displaced outside the boundaries of the rink of play provided such bowl was running on a bias which would have enabled it to re-enter the rink.

(ii) of a bowl in motion

If a bowl in motion be displaced, the Directors or Opponents shall come to an agreement as to where the bowl would have come to rest and the replacement of any part of the head disturbed by the displaced bowl, otherwise the end shall be dead.

(iii) of a bowl at rest

If a bowl at rest be displaced, the Directors or Opponents shall agree to restore the bowl to its former position and of the replacement of any part of the head disturbed by the displaced bowl, otherwise the end shall be dead.

28D Inadvertent displacement

(I) If a bowl be displaced at the time of it being marked as a Toucher or measured it shall be restored to its former position by the opposing Director or Opponent.

(ii) If such a displacement is caused by a Marker or an Umpire, the Marker or Umpire shall restore the bowl to its former position of which the Marker or Umpire shall be the sole judge.

28E Preventing displacement by a bowl from an adjoining rink

(i) A bowl at rest on the rink, if in danger of being moved by a bowl from an adjoining rink, may be lifted by either Director to allow the neutral bowl to pass, and then be replaced, provided such action would not influence the outcome of the head.

(ii) Either Director may stop a bowl from an adjoining rink which is in danger of colliding with a bowl in the head or a bowl in course on the rink of play and shall stop a bowl which appears likely to collide with the Jack. The bowl which has been stopped shall be replayed provided it was delivered on a bias which would have resulted in it re-entering its own rink.

(iii) The Marker shall stop any bowl from an adjoining rink which is likely to displace the Jack or any bowl at rest or in motion on the rink on which such Marker is officiating.

28F Lifting of the mat

The mat may be lifted and subsequently replaced in the same position to allow a bowl in course from an adjacent rink to pass without disturbance.
