SECTION 5 - THE GAME 17 STARTING THE GAME 17A Trial ends (i) (a) Trial ends shall be permitted before start of play in each game of a competition, or on the resumption of an unfinished competition or game on another day. (b) All trial ends shall be completed by the scheduled starting time and if still in progress at the scheduled starting time shall cease immediately. (c) Not more than one end each way shall be permitted. (d) Trial ends shall be played on the rink of play. (e) Each player shall deliver the same number of bowls as for the game proper. (f) When each bowl has come to rest it shall be positioned at least 2m behind the Jack. (g) If the Jack is moved during play it shall be replaced in its original position. (ii) When played with an Opponent or opposing Team (a) Skips or Opponents shall toss to decide who plays first. (b) For the second trial end the opposing Lead or Opponent shall play first. (c) For the game proper the Skips or Opponents shall not toss – the same order of play as for the trial end shall apply. (iii) On the resumption of an unfinished game on another day (a) The Skips or Opponents shall not toss. (b) The player who played first in the uncompleted end shall play first. 17B Tossing for opening play Managers in a Sides game or Skips in a Team game, or Opponents shall toss a coin. The winner of the toss shall decide who shall play first. 17C Start of play The start of play in any game shall be the delivery of the Jack by the first to play in the first end. 17D Play in subsequent ends In all ends subsequent to the first, other than that of an extra end in a drawn game, the winner of the preceding scoring end shall play first. 17E Play after a tied or dead end In the event of a tied end (no score) or a dead end, the first to play in the tied end or dead end shall again play first.
PLACING THE MAT 18A For all ends The player to play first in any end shall place the centre line of the mat length-wise on the centre line of the rink with the front edge of the mat not less than 2m from the rear ditch and not less than 25m from the front ditch. Where groundsheets are in use the Controlling Body will direct the location of the mat for every end. 18B Replacing the Mat After the Jack has been delivered and is resting in a legal position on the rink the distance of the mat from the rear ditch shall not be altered other than as a result of a successful challenge. Before the first bowl in any end is delivered, the Umpire or any player may challenge the position of the mat as regards its alignment or distance from either ditch. If adjustment is required, the mat shall be moved to the nearest legal position. If the mat is accidentally displaced during the progress of an end it shall be replaced as near as is practicable to its former position. If during the progress of an end the mat is found to be not on the centre line of the rink it shall be moved sideways to the centre line. Should the mat be picked up by a player before the end is completed, the opposing player shall have the right of replacing the mat in its former position. At the completion of an end the mat shall be placed wholly beyond the face of the rear bank. However, Opponents may agree to carry the mat between ends. 18C Challenge After the first bowl of an end has been delivered no one shall be permitted to challenge the distance of the mat from either ditch.
DELIVERING THE JACK (i) Before the Jack is delivered in any end, the bowls (with the optional exception of the bowl of the player about to deliver the Jack) shall be positioned out of the player’s vision. (ii) The player to play first shall deliver the Jack and ensure that it is properly centred. (iii) The Jack shall be centred by moving the Jack at right angles to the centre line of the rink. (iv) If the Jack in course comes to rest at a distance of less than 2m from the front ditch, it shall be moved so that the portion of the Jack nearest to the mat line is 2m from the front ditch.
IMPROPER DELIVERY OF THE JACK Should the Jack in any end be improperly delivered by ending its course in the ditch, or outside the boundaries of the rink, or after centring, less than 23m from the centre of the mat line, the opposing Skip may direct the Lead where to place the mat within the limits stated in Law 18A(i), and then place the Jack in a legal position on the centre line. In Singles the other Opponent may re-lay the mat and then direct the Marker where to place the Jack. If the position of the mat or Jack is challenged, and either found to be not legal, then either mat or Jack shall be moved to the nearest legal position. The right of the player first delivering the Jack in that end to play the first bowl of the end shall not be affected. No one shall be permitted to challenge the legality of the position of the Jack after the first to play has delivered the first bowl. If the Jack has been improperly delivered and placed by the opposing Skip or Marker (as directed by the Opponent) as in Law 20(i), and that end is made dead, then the player who delivered the Jack in the dead end, shall deliver the Jack again and play first.
FOOT-FAULTING AND ENCROACHING 21A FOOT FAULTING (i) A player at the moment of delivering the Jack or a bowl, shall have one foot entirely within the confines of the mat. The foot may be either in contact with, or over, the mat. Failure to observe this Law constitutes foot-faulting. (ii) Should a player infringe the Law of foot-faulting the Umpire shall, after having given a prior warning, have the bowl stopped and declared dead. If the bowl has disturbed the head, the Opposing Director or Opponent shall have the option of: (a) resetting the head, or (b) leaving the head as altered, or (c) declaring the end dead. 21B ENCROACHING (i) A player shall not encroach on an adjoining rink where play is in progress. (ii) If a player in possession of the rink infringes this Law, the player shall be warned by the Umpire. (iii) For any subsequent infringement, the Umpire shall have the bowl then delivered by that player stopped and declared dead. If the bowl has disturbed the head the Opponent or Opposing Director shall have the option of: (a) resetting the head, or (b) leaving the head as altered, or (c) declaring the end dead.
